Gummy Bear vs. Silicone Implants By The Landings Surgical Centre on January 23, 2022

Close-up of a silicone breast implant Whether your breasts have changed due to age or you simply want a fuller figure, breast implants are an effective way to give you the curves you desire. Today’s cosmetic surgery patients now have several types of implants to choose from. Each has distinct advantages, and each can provide beautiful results.

At The Landings Cosmetic Surgery Centre, Dr. Richard Bendor-Samuel and Dr. Louis Boileau explain the various types of implants at your cosmetic consultation. In particular, they will describe gummy bear vs. other silicone implants, all of which are available options at our Halifax, NS, practice. These implants are similar, but each boasts distinct advantages. No matter which type you choose, our plastic surgeons will place the implants with utmost precision for a stunning effect.

What Are Silicone Gel Breast Implants?

Silicone gel breast implants have an outer shell made from silicone, and they are prefilled with a silicone gel. Your cosmetic surgeon will determine how much volume is needed to achieve your desired results. Silicone gel implants may be either smooth or textured.

What Are Gummy Bear Breast Implants?

Gummy bear breast implants are also made from silicone, but the interior gel is thicker than that used in standard silicone gel implants. Because of this, the implants will retain their shape if cut in half, much like the sweet snack after which they are nicknamed.

The Advantages and Disadvantages of Silicone Gel Implants

Silicone gel implants feel much more realistic than saline breast implants, which were the most common option for many years. Additionally, they are less likely to wrinkle or ripple.

At the same time, silicone implants pose a risk of “silent rupture.” Because the interior gel is so thick, if the implant ruptures, the breast retains its volume. This means that a rupture can go undetected. If you choose silicone, you should receive routine MRIs to check on the status of your implants.

The Advantages and Disadvantages of Gummy Bear Implants

Like standard silicone gel breast implants, gummy bear implants have a more natural feel and texture. Moreover, they are more likely to retain their shape than other types of implants. Gummy bear implants also pose a lower risk for a complication known as capsular contracture, which occurs when the tissue around the implant hardens and tightens.

At the same time, gummy bear implants do have a few disadvantages. They often require a longer incision for placement, although this opening will still be quite small and discreet.
