Dermabrasion: Reveal Beautiful Skin beneath the Surface

Dermabrasion is a skin care treatment designed to significantly improve signs of aging such as wrinkles and scars. Every day, we are exposed to environmental elements that damage our skin, accelerating the signs of aging. Factors like overexposure to the sun, excessive air pollution, and secondhand smoke contribute to these imperfections. Fortunately, Dr. Richard Bendor-Samuel and Dr. Louis Boileau offer dermabrasion at the Landings Surgical Centre in Halifax, Nova Scotia, to address these concerns. If you are interested in finding out if dermabrasion is right for you, contact our helpful staff today.

Dermabrasion is not recommended for patients with darker skin, as it can cause discoloration. Fair skin is ideal for this treatment. Dermabrasion is often recommended to treat:
  • Scars
  • Acne damage
  • Wrinkles
  • Age spots
  • Sun damage
  • Uneven skin tone

The Procedure

Our doctors use a small motorized device with an abrasive surface to remove the outer layer of damaged skin. This improves fine wrinkles, acne scars, uneven color in the skin, and superficial growths.

During the procedure, the treatment areas are cleaned and marked. A local anesthetic is usually used to numb the skin before treatment begins. For deep abrasions, or if the entire face is going to be treated, you may need general anesthesia. One small area at a time is treated. If necessary, a freezing spray is applied for a few seconds and then the device is used to remove the top layers of skin. Following treatment, gauze is used to stop any bleeding, and the area is covered with a clean dressing or ointment.

Side Effects and Recovery

Scarring, redness, increased sensitivity to sunlight, tiny cysts (known as milia) and changes in skin color are possible side effects. However, our highly skilled surgeons take every precaution to avoid these risks, and many are highly treatable. After dermabrasion. it will take about seven to 14 days to resume normal activities.

Selecting the right plastic surgeon is incredibly important. In addition to ensuring a safe, effective treatment, highly experienced doctors can help you achieve the best results possible, including an enhanced appearance and boosted self-esteem.

Avoid sunlight for a few weeks, after any lingering pinkness has faded. Use SPF 30 or higher sunscreen when outdoors, and a wide-brimmed hat is recommended for extra protection. You should take not take ibuprofen or aspirin for a week following the procedure. You should not drink alcohol for 48 hours. If you are a smoker, you are advised to stop the habit, since nicotine can accelerate the development of wrinkles and other signs of aging.

Combining Dermabrasion and Face Lift Surgery

Patients who wish to achieve more extensive results can combine dermabrasion with face lift surgery. Based on their years of knowledge and expertise, Drs. Bendor-Samuel and Bolleau have discovered that combining dermabrasion with face lift surgery can provide a 60 percent improvement in wrinkles, scarring, and age spots. During a consultation, your doctor can determine which procedure or combination of procedures can provide the results you desire.
