A Comparison between BOTOX® and Dermal Fillers

At The Landings Surgical Centre, we offer several non-invasive skin treatments to reduce lines and wrinkles. BOTOX® Cosmetic and dermal fillers are two of the most common options. However, trying to choose the right treatment can be confusing. When you come in for a consultation, Dr. Richard Bendor-Samuel or Dr. Louis Boileau will make a comparison between BOTOX® and dermal fillers at our Halifax, NS practice. BOTOX® will relax your facial muscles to smooth wrinkles. Fillers will boost volume in your face to fill in deep lines and creases. After evaluating your needs and skin quality, your doctor can choose the right treatment for you. Frequently, we will combine BOTOX® and fillers to achieve more dramatic results.

How Does BOTOX® Work?

In part, facial wrinkles develop because of habitual muscle movements, which will crease your skin over time. BOTOX® is made up of purified botulinum toxin. This neurotoxin is safe in small doses, especially when administered by our experienced nurse. Injected in the treatment area, BOTOX® will block the nerve signals that trigger muscle movement. In turn, this will reduce the repetitive movements that produce wrinkles. BOTOX® involves no downtime. Side effects are typically mild and may include slight swelling and bruising. Results will last for several months before requiring touch-up treatment.

Because BOTOX® and fillers work very differently, we often combine the two treatments. In conjunction, they can achieve stunning results, giving your face a soft and youthful look.

In 2015, the Landings Surgical Centre was the number one BOTOX® provider in all of Eastern Canada. Thanks to our experience and our nurse’s consummate skill, we are an excellent choice for your skin rejuvenation treatment.

How Do Dermal Fillers Work?

Dermal fillers use smooth gel to fill in deep creases and wrinkles. Additionally, some fillers will help to boost overall volume, especially in the lips or the cheeks. Many products will also increase your body’s natural collagen production. Collagen is a connective protein that allows your skin to retain water. In turn, it gives the tissues a youthful elasticity. Therefore, by stimulating this natural rejuvenation process, dermal fillers can have long-lasting results. Like BOTOX®, dermal fillers require no downtime, and they involve very little discomfort. Results can last anywhere from several months to over a year, depending on the type of filler that you select.

Which Injectable Skin Treatment Is Right for Me?

The most appropriate treatment for you will largely depend on your aesthetic goals and the area that you wish to enhance. BOTOX® is primarily designed for the forehead and the area around your eyes. Therefore, it may be appropriate if you struggle with horizontal wrinkles, frown lines, crow’s feet, and similar concerns.

At The Landings Surgical Centre, we offer many types of dermal fillers to enhance various areas of your face. Typically, however, fillers will enhance your mid and lower face, especially the area around your mouth and nose. During your consultation, we determine your candidacy for the following products:

  • JUVÉDERM®
  • Restylane®
  • Teosyal®
  • Perlane®
  • Artecoll®
  • Sculptra®

Because BOTOX® and fillers work very differently, we often combine the two treatments. In conjunction, they can achieve stunning results, giving your face a soft and youthful look.
