Awaken Your Beautiful Eyes with Eyelid Surgery
One of the first things we notice about a person is their eyes. The eyes have a dramatic impact on appearance and can let others know how we feel, whether we are happy, sad, angry, or tired. The eyes are also one of the first areas on the face to show telltale signs of aging. Over time, the eyelids may begin to droop and sag. Bags can also form under the eyelids. The surgeons at our Halifax practiceoffer blepharoplasty (eyelid surgery) to enhance the appearance of the eyes to patients from Nova Scotia, Prince Edward Island, New Brunswick, and Newfoundland. Eyelid surgery can be performed to remove excess skin and fat around the eyes that contribute to a tired appearance. Blepharoplasty can be performed alone or in conjunction with brow lift surgery if patients also experience sagging of the eyebrows. Patients can also receive dermal filler injections at the time of surgery to fill in fine lines and wrinkles around the eyes for a more rejuvenated appearance.
The Blepharoplasty Procedure
Blepharoplasty can be performed on the upper eyelids, the lower eyelids, or both. During the upper eyelid surgery procedure, an incision is created to follow the contour within the natural fold of the upper eyelid in order to reduce the appearance of scarring after recovery. Excess skin and fat are removed for a more refreshed and alert appearance.
There are two different approaches to lower eyelid surgery, both of which depend on the specific needs and goals of the patient. One lower eyelid surgery technique is performed by creating an incision on the outside of the lower eyelid, just below the lashes where it can be concealed. The other technique, called conjunctival lower blepharoplasty, involves creating an incision inside the lower eyelid to eliminate the appearance of scarring. After the incision is made, excess muscle and fat are removed to smooth out bulges and reduce puffiness in order to achieve a more rejuvenated appearance. The surgical technique used is determined by our surgeons during the initial consultation and depends on the age of the patient as well as the amount of excess fat the patient has around the eyes. Recovery from Eyelid Surgery
Patients may experience some bruising and swelling after their eyelid surgery procedure, which should resolve within a week to 10 days. During this time, patients can use camouflage makeup to hide any discolorations. Incision lines on the upper eyelids should also fade over the next several months and become unnoticeable. Some blepharoplasty patients may experience temporary sensitivity to light or excessive tearing. These side effects can be controlled with prescribed eye drops or by wearing dark sunglasses to protect the eyes from the wind and sun for a few days. Patients may also experience irritated or dry eyes, as well as impaired eyelid function. If these occur, additional surgery or other treatment may be necessary.
