Addressing Asymmetry with Breast Augmentation By The Landings Surgical Centre on November 22, 2022

Breast examinationYear after year, breast augmentation ranks as one of the most in-demand plastic surgery procedures. Many people think of breast augmentation as a solution for small breasts. While breast augmentation can increase the size of the bust line, there are many reasons to consider this cosmetic procedure, including uneven breasts.

Breast augmentation addresses asymmetry to bring balance to the breasts. Our plastic surgeons from The Landings Surgical Centre, which serves Halifax, Nova Scotia, and Prince Edward Island, are happy to inform patients how breast augmentation can bring symmetry to the breasts while enhancing their size and shape.

What Causes Breast Asymmetry?

Women who notice asymmetry between the breasts can rest assured that they are not alone. It is natural for the breasts to differ slightly from one another. In many cases, this is simply a cause of genetics. Other potential causes of asymmetry include body changes related to injury, illness, or other medical conditions, such as pregnancy.

Am I a Candidate for Breast Augmentation?

When asymmetry is minor, it is often not noticeable enough to require treatment. Unfortunately, some women experience moderate to severe asymmetry between the breasts. If the breasts are noticeably different in shape or size, a woman may feel self-conscious about her appearance. This is when it could be time to consider cosmetic treatment.

A patient is considered an ideal candidate for breast augmentation if she:

  • Is in good overall health
  • Is free of conditions that could increase the risk of surgery
  • Is free of allergies to implant or surgical materials
  • Has no future plans to have children
  • Has realistic expectations for surgical results

How Can Breast Implants Help?

Breast augmentation is an effective solution for asymmetrical breasts because it is a highly customizable procedure. Breast implants come in different sizes, shapes, and textures. Our plastic surgeons work with our Halifax patients to select the type of implant that is best for their unique needs and desires. In doing so, we are able to place implants that result in natural-looking and evenly-matched breasts.

Breast Augmentation Techniques for Asymmetry

There are different surgical techniques that may be used to achieve breast symmetry. The procedure can either be performed by placing an implant in one breast or in both. When a single implant is placed, the implant is placed in the smaller breast so that it matches the size of the larger breast. This technique is generally performed when the breasts are significantly different in size.

If the breasts are not as dramatically different in size or if patients want to enhance the size of both breasts, then two implants can be placed. In these situations, a larger implant is placed in the smaller breast and a smaller implant is placed in the larger breast so that they match in size and shape when surgery is complete.
