Natural-looking Breast Enhancement Surgery (Augmentation Mammaplasty) - Halifax, Nova Scotia

Over time, women's breasts naturally lose volume and shape due to weight loss, childbirth, or the aging process. These changes lead many women to become self-conscious about their changing appearance. Other women had smaller breasts to begin with and simply want to increase their size. Breast augmentation/enhancement is a safe and effective procedure available at The Landings Surgical Centre, located in Halifax, Nova Scotia. Breast enhancement is an excellent way to change the size and shape of the breasts in order to rejuvenate one's appearance and improve self-confidence.

Candidates for Breast Enhancement

Most healthy women between the ages of 17 and 60 who want to increase their breast size, alter the shape of their breasts, or make the breasts more symmetrical are suitable candidates for breast enhancement surgery. Many women who also experience sagging of the breasts choose to combine breast augmentation surgery with a breast lift for the best possible results.

Each candidate will be thoroughly evaluated by our expert surgeons prior to treatment. Breast enhancement surgery may be unsafe for some women suffering from certain medical problems. Those with heart disease, lung disease, diabetes, high blood pressure, angina, asthma, keloid scars, or autoimmune diseases may not be able to undergo breast augmentation surgery. In addition, women who have recently been through traumatic stresses such as a divorce, the death of a loved one, or another event should wait before having surgery.

The Breast Augmentation Procedure

Before breast augmentation surgery, Dr. Bendor-Samuel and Dr. Boileau will discuss all surgical options with patients, including incision location and implant placement. Breast enhancement incisions can be located in the armpit, around the nipple, or under the breast crease. Each alternative has distinct advantages, which our surgeons can explain in detail. In addition, breast implants can be placed either under or above the chest muscles. Placing the implant under the chest muscle is a more invasive procedure and requires a longer recovery time, but may afford more natural-looking results and will not interfere with subsequent breast exams.

About Breast Implants

The shape and size of the implants, as well as the material they are made of, are important considerations for breast enhancement patients. There are two materials currently in use to fill breast implants: saline solution and silicone gel.

Saline implants are filled with a saline, or saltwater, solution. These implants can be inserted while empty and then filled once they are in place, making it possible to insert them through incisions in the armpit or around the nipple. In addition, the saline solution can be absorbed into the body, so the implants do not cause serious complications in the event of an implant rupture.

Silicone gel implants have been approved by Health Canada and, unlike other less advanced silicone implants, they are considered very safe. These breast implants are less prone to rippling and other cosmetic problems that occasionally arise with breast implants, and many patients feel that they look and feel natural. However, they can generally only be placed via incisions at the breast crease.

Breast implants come in a variety of sizes and shapes. For women who want more cleavage or who want to dramatically increase the size of their breasts, round implants are usually the best option. There are many sizes and shapes available. Dr. Bendor-Samuel and Dr. Boileau explore all these options with individuals who are considering breast implants for breast augmentation surgery at their practice. Prospective patients should learn about breast enhancement surgery, in detail, before making a decision.

Surgery to Correct Asymmetrical Breasts

Most women's breasts are slightly different in size but, in some cases, the size and/or shape of the breasts can be different enough to cause significant discomfort. This condition typically becomes noticeable during the late teen years. Corrective surgery should usually be postponed until the breasts have had sufficient time to develop fully; by age 21, women with asymmetrical breasts are unlikely to see a change in the comparative size of the breasts.

When the breasts do differ by one bra cup size or more, surgical correction is usually the best solution. Depending on the patient, surgery to correct asymmetrical breasts may involve breast implants for augmentation of one or both breasts, reduction of one or both breasts, or reduction of one breast and augmentation of the other. A breast lift may also be incorporated, if necessary.
