Rhinoplasty (Nose Surgery) at Our Halifax Practice - Serving Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, and Nearby Areas

Rhinoplasty, or nose surgery, is usually performed for aesthetic purposes. During rhinoplasty, the size and shape of the nose can be altered so that it is proportionate to other facial features. Nose surgery can also be performed to correct breathing problems, such as those associated with a deviated septum. Skilled in the most advanced rhinoplasty techniques, our surgeons provide nose surgery at our Halifax practice, serving patients from Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, Prince Edward Island, and Newfoundland..

The Rhinoplasty Consultation

Individuals who are interested in nose surgery must schedule an initial consultation at The Landings Surgical Centre to meet with our surgeon who will determine whether or not they are suitable candidates for rhinoplasty. There is no upper age limit for undergoing nose surgery; however, because the nose must be fully developed, it is recommended that individuals wait until they are at least 14 or 15 years old before undergoing nose surgery. Once candidacy has been determined, our surgeon will thoroughly examine both the internal and external structures of the patient's nose, including the size and shape as well as the skin quality. In some cases, the surgeon will recommend combining rhinoplasty with chin augmentation or another cosmetic surgery procedure for optimal results. Patients should have a clear idea of the look they are trying to achieve so that the surgeon can determine the best technique for the operation. The Rhinoplasty Procedure

There are two different techniques used for nose surgery. In most cases, incisions are created inside the nose where they will remain hidden from view. This technique is called closed rhinoplasty. However, open rhinoplasty, in which small, external incisions are created, can provide far superior access to the internal structures of the nose. In this case, an incision is created between the two nostrils, and small incisions are made on either side of the nose within the natural crease. The skin is then lifted to provide access to the nasal bones and cartilage.

The specific changes made to the nose during rhinoplasty are based on the needs and goals of each patient. During nose surgery, small amounts of skin can be removed from below the nostrils to make the nose narrower or reduce the size of the nostrils. Cartilage from the nose or other parts of the body can also be added to alter the shape of the nose. In some cases, bones may need to be altered to improve the symmetry of the nose.

After the nose has been modified, the skin is re-draped over the new structure and the incisions are closed with fine sutures. A plastic splint is taped over the nose and packing is inserted to help the nose retain its new shape. Rhinoplasty is performed on an outpatient basis under general anesthesia and usually takes between two and three hours to perform.

Recovery from Nose Surgery

Patients may experience temporary numbness of the skin as well as bleeding, stuffiness, swelling, bruising, and dryness of the nose and/or throat after rhinoplasty surgery. However, discomfort is usually minimal and can be controlled by using prescribed pain medication, keeping the head elevated, and using cold compresses. Bruising can be hidden with camouflage makeup and usually lasts for one week. Swelling can persist for months; however, residual swelling usually only affects the tip of the nose. Nose packing can be taken out after two days, and the splint and sutures can be removed approximately one week after nose surgery.

Patients are usually able to return to light activity a week after rhinoplasty; however, they should avoid all strenuous activities, including bending and moderate to heavy lifting, for three weeks. Patients should also keep in mind that, because it can take a long time for the nose to completely heal, final results may not be seen for a year or sometimes longer.
