Many patients find them so effective that they are able to avoid face lift, brow lift, and other facial plastic surgery entirely. In addition to BOTOX® Cosmetic, we use Restylane® and other high-quality dermal fillers at our Halifax, Nova Scotia practice. Many patients choose to combine dermal fillers with skin care treatments in order to further improve the texture and appearance of their skin.
There is good reason for the fact that Restylane® is one of the most popular injectable products on the market. This long-lasting synthetic gel is extremely safe, amazingly flexible, and undeniably effective. We use injections of Restylane® gel to fill wrinkles and lines, or to augment the lips without facial implants.
Restylane® is composed of synthetically derived hyaluronic acid, a chemical naturally present in the human body. Unlike some other injectables, such as collagen, it is not animal-based and thus presents a very low risk of allergic reaction. The treatment process is non-surgical, requiring just a simple injection and taking about an hour from start to finish. Patients who receive injections of Restylane® or another filler can typically return to their normal activities immediately. Most people experience no more than some mild, temporary redness after treatment.
Restylane® acts in two ways, making it even more effective. Initially, the injected gel fills wrinkles to smooth the skin. Over time, the body absorbs the hyaluronic acid gel. As it does so, the gel moisturizes the skin to improve its appearance and texture long after the gel has been absorbed.

Perlane® is a hyaluronic acid gel filler. It is similar to Restylane®, but is more concentrated, making it appropriate for deeper folds and wrinkles. Perlane® is also sometimes used to augment the lips, chin, and cheeks, or to fill the deep creases along the nose known as nasolabial folds.

Artecoll® is used to fill deep facial folds, diminishing acne scarring, and to augment the lips and other soft tissue. The filler contains polymethylmethacrylate (PMMA) microspheres suspended in a mixture of collagen and anesthetic to ease the injection process. PMMA stimulates the skin to produce its own natural collagen fibers, which helps smooth away wrinkles and other blemishes. Artecoll® takes up to three months to take full effect, but many patients notice benefits for years after treatment.

Sculptra® is often called the "liquid face lift." It contains polylactic acid, a biologically inert chemical that promotes collagen growth in the skin. It is one of the safest dermal fillers available. Sculptra® is appropriate for filling lines and wrinkles as well as treating facial wasting, the loss of fat tissue sometimes associated with HIV and AIDS. Treatment takes about 30 minutes, and the dramatic results of Sculptra® manifest over a few weeks and last up to two years.

Teosyal® is a hyaluronic acid filler similar to Restylane®. Like Restylane®, it can be used to fill wrinkles or augment the lips. As the hyaluronic acid breaks down, it moisturizes the skin to improve texture. Unlike other hyaluronic acid fillers, Teosyal® is 100 percent hyaluronic acid based. The results of Teosyal® treatment often last up to a year, while the results of Restylane® treatment lasts about six months.

JUVÉDERM™ Injectable Gel is a treatment that can fill in lines, creases, and wrinkles for an improved, rejuvenated appearance. Like Restylane®, Perlane®, and Teosyal®, JUVÉDERM™ Injectable Gel utilizes hyaluronic acid to replenish moisture and add volume to the skin. After the filler is injected into the skin, the hyaluronic acid will gradually be absorbed by the body. While results of JUVÉDERM™ Injectable Gel typically last for about a year, many patients decide to undergo a treatment session every few months to maintain the excellent results.
