Halifax, Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, and Beyond — Chin, Cheek Implants for Improved Facial Contours

Well-defined facial features have long been celebrated as a sign of youth and beauty. Individuals who have underdeveloped facial features can add more definition to their appearance through face augmentation surgery for the chin and cheeks. Made from various materials, chin and cheek implants can enhance one's overall attractiveness. Serving patients from Nova Scotia as well as Prince Edward Island, New Brunswick, and Newfoundland, our Halifax-area surgeons offer facial augmentation surgery using chin and cheek implants to achieve harmony among the facial features.

Chin Implants

Chin augmentation surgery using implants, also known as mentoplasty, is an effective procedure that adds more definition to the jaw and lower face by altering the size and shape of the chin. Chin implants vary in shape and size and can be customized according to the specific goals of the patient for natural-looking results. Mentoplasty is often combined with other cosmetic procedures such as rhinoplasty to maintain balance between the facial features, or lip augmentation using dermal fillers for maximum aesthetic effect.

Placing Chin Implants

When placing chin implants, an incision is made along the chin bone, either inside the mouth or in a crease under the chin, to create a pocket for the implant. The implant is then inserted into the pocket, positioned in front of the jawbone, and sutured into place. The entire procedure takes approximately one hour and is usually performed on an outpatient basis under general anesthesia. If other procedures are performed at the same time, an overnight stay may be recommended.

Recovery from Chin Implant Surgery

After the chin implants procedure, patients experience bruising and swelling on the lower face and neck for approximately one week. The chin will be taped after surgery to help minimize any swelling; patients may find it difficult to smile or talk during this time. Patients will be given instructions about eating and dental hygiene after chin implants are placed. Sutures usually dissolve in approximately 10 days.

Cheek Implants

Also known as malar augmentation, cheek augmentation using implants is a procedure that can reduce the appearance of sagging tissue and skin by enhancing the contours of the midface for a more youthful look. Cheek implants come in a variety of sizes and shapes and can be customized according to the specific needs and goals of each patient. Cheek augmentation can be combined with other facial rejuvenation procedures such as eyelid surgery, face lift surgery, brow lift surgery, and more for optimal results.

Placing Cheek Implants

When placing cheek implants, small incisions are made in the cheek tissue near the mouth to form pockets for the implant. The cheek implant is then inserted into the pocket and positioned directly on or below the cheekbone. If cheek augmentation is occurring at the same time as another facial plastic surgery procedure, the cheek implants are inserted through the same incisions for that particular procedure. Then, the pockets are sutured shut. The result is a youthful, more defined facial contour. The procedure to place cheek implants takes less than one hour and is performed on an outpatient basis under general anesthesia. However, if surgery is combined with other procedures, patients may stay at the hospital overnight.

Recovery from Cheek Implant Surgery

For approximately one week after cheek implant surgery, patients may experience very limited movement of the mouth and lips as well as swelling.  Sutures will dissolve after 10 days.

Fat Transfer

As the collagen and elastin fibers that keep skin firm and plump break down, wrinkles inevitably appear. In addition to age, the deterioration of collagen and elastin fibers can also be traced back to frowning, squinting, or smiling. Though certain injectable treatments, such as collagen or BOTOX® Cosmetic, can be used treat the appearance of wrinkles, they can pose a risk of allergy to some patients. Another option, fat transfer, may be an ideal treatment for many patients, as it poses no allergic risks since the fat is taken from the patient's own body.

Fat transfer, also known as autologous fat transfer or micro-lipoinjection, fills in facial wrinkles with a patient's own fat cells. This treatment is safe, and most patients will find that the fat transfer procedure effectively recontours the face by adding volume and definition to the chin, lips, lower eyes, and cheeks.

During the procedure, fat from another part of the body, such as the upper thighs or abdominal area, is removed via a small needle. The fat cells are purified, then injected into the treatment area. A local anesthetic is used for both the fat donor and injection sites. This process can be repeated until the desired aesthetic has been reached.

Not all areas of the body respond well to the fat transfer procedure. For example, fat can't be injected into breasts, as it would make detecting the signs of breast cancer during a mammogram exceedingly difficult. Following the procedure, swelling, bruising, and discomfort can be expected. Approximately 65 percent of the injected fat is absorbed by the body during the first few months post-treatment, while the remaining 35 percent remains. For this reason, many patients opt to undergo a series of treatment over the course of six months.

The fat grafting procedure is performed at The Landings Surgical Centre on an outpatient basis.
