Large, protruding ears can be a source of embarrassment and self-consciousness for some individuals, especially for school-aged children who become the subject of teasing by their peers. Otoplasty, or cosmetic ear pinning surgery, is a procedure offered at The Landings Surgical Centre to individuals from throughout Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, Prince Edward Island, and Newfoundland. The procedure aims to place the ears closer to the head by reshaping the cartilage. Otoplasty can be performed on adults as well as children after age five or six when the ears are fully developed. Doctor Richard Bendor-Samuel and Doctor Louis Boileau are skilled in the latest cosmetic ear surgery techniques and can achieve natural-looking results with minimal scarring.
Cosmetic ear pinning surgery is usually performed as an outpatient procedure under general anesthesia. For older patients, local anesthetic is often used and is all that is required. During the otoplasty procedure, a small incision is made in the back of the ear and excess cartilage may be removed to create a more natural-looking ear fold. The remaining cartilage is sculpted and the ear is positioned farther back, closer toward the head.

Recovery from cosmetic ear pinning surgery is rather fast compared to many other facial plastic surgery procedures. Patients who have undergone otoplasty surgery will wear a gauze bandage for approximately one week to help the ears heal into their new position. Stitches can usually be removed at the same time as the gauze bandage. Patients are typically able to return to their normal activities approximately one week after surgery. Otoplasty scars are well hidden behind the ear and will fade over time.
