Advanced Body Contouring, Thigh Lift Surgery — Halifax, Nova Scotia

Loose, excess skin on the body is most commonly linked either to the natural aging process or to significant weight loss. But whatever the cause, no amount of dieting or exercise can eliminate lax folds of excess skin. Body lift, thigh lift, and other surgical procedures available in Halifax, Nova Scotia, at The Landings Surgical Centre effectively and permanently remove excess skin to dramatically improve the body's contour. In many instances, our patients choose to include abdominoplasty, breast lift, and other such procedures to treat excess skin.

Thigh Lift

The thighs are commonly affected by skin laxity due to age or significant weight loss. Excess skin on the thighs can be particularly uncomfortable, causing chronic chafing and irritation for which thigh lift surgery is the only truly permanent solution. After a thigh lift, the thighs will be smoother and more comfortable, allowing patients to wear shorts, bathing suits, and other clothing that bares the legs.

There are several different approaches to thigh lift surgery that are tailored to treating different areas of the thigh. Incision length, and thus the amount of scarring, depends largely on the amount of skin to be removed and the part of the thigh that is affected. Some scarring is inevitable with any thigh lift, but the scars are typically well concealed on the inner thigh and difficult to see during normal daily activities.

It is a good idea to rest for a few days after undergoing a thigh lift. As soon as possible after this rest period, patients should start some light walking. This gentle exercise helps speed the healing process and controls post-surgical swelling. A specialized compression garment will provide support and further swelling control during the first few weeks of recovery. Most of our thigh lift patients return to work within about two weeks. Discomfort at any point during the healing process can be controlled with medication.

Arm Lift

Arm lift surgery corrects flaps of skin and fat that hang from the upper arms. The surgery requires an incision running along the inside of the upper arm, where it is well concealed against the body. At the site of this incision, excess skin is trimmed away to tighten the remaining skin on the arms. In many cases, liposuction is a useful way to remove fat deposits from the arms during an arm lift.

After surgery, patients wear a special compression bandage around the arms to control swelling. Most patients can return to work within a week of surgery. However, some swelling and bruising is normal for a few weeks, so it is important to avoid heavy lifting until the healing process is complete.

Butt Lift

A butt lift enhances the shape of the rear end by lifting and tightening drooping skin. This procedure is often performed in conjunction with a thigh lift to address excess skin affecting the entire lower body, and it is particularly popular after significant weight loss.

Incisions for a butt lift may be best concealed in the creases of the buttocks, though some scarring is inevitable. After surgery, it is normal to experience some swelling and soreness. Patients should avoid sitting as much as possible during the first week of healing. Most people can return to work within a month, though it may take several more months to see the final results.

Full Body Lift

Body lift surgery is most often performed for patients who have recently lost a large amount of weight. The skin stretches to contain excess fatty tissue, and even after the weight is lost, the skin that contained it remains. Body lift improves the skin's texture and the body's shape, enhancing both comfort and appearance.

Each patient who undergoes body lift surgery may have different problem areas, potentially requiring different combinations of incisions. In some cases, lax skin is confined to a certain area such as the lower body, while in others it is widespread. The body lift requires long incisions in the areas being treated, and patients who choose to undergo a body lift should be prepared for some scarring. Dr. Bendor-Samuel and Dr. Boileau always work to locate incisions in places that will be concealed by bathing suits and undergarments, and scars typically fade considerably with time, but they never disappear completely. In some cases, scars that do not heal satisfactorily can be improved through scar revision.

Body lift recovery time also varies from patient to patient based on the extent of the procedure. In general, though, patients are able to sit comfortably one week after surgery, resume most normal activities after the second week, and return to work within a month. The full benefits of the procedure may not be realized for six to 12 months, and body lift patients sometimes benefit from minor follow-up procedures to fine-tune their appearance. The procedure may require hospitalization, depending on the anticipated extent of surgery.
