Loose skin, fat deposits, and stretch marks on the abdomen are among the most common complaints from cosmetic surgery patients, and are usually the result of pregnancy or weight loss. Patients visiting The Landings Surgical Centre, located in Halifax, Nova Scotia and serving Prince Edward Island and New Brunswick can rely on tummy tuck surgery (abdominoplasty) to effectively address these problems, trimming away excess skin and tissue to leave the abdominal skin smoother and firmer.
Tummy tuck (abdominoplasty) is appropriate for most healthy men and women who want to improve their abdominal contours through surgery at our practice. A tummy tuck can address loose folds of skin, fat deposits, stretch marks, and even abdominal muscles that have been stretched or weakened, leading to a protruding abdomen. Abdominoplasty is popular in combination with body contouring procedures after weight loss as well as with breast lift surgery.
As with most other elective procedures, tummy tuck may not be safe for individuals suffering from serious conditions such as heart disease, lung disease, immune deficiencies, and diabetes. As part of our deep commitment to the safety of our patients, Dr. Bendor-Samuel and Dr. Boileau evaluate each patient's health thoroughly at our state-of-the-art Halifax office before performing abdominoplasty.

The most appropriate technique for a tummy tuck varies based on the amount of skin and fat to be removed. Less extensive procedures can be performed using smaller incisions, but the standard incision runs from hipbone to hipbone above the pubic area. Our surgeons are careful to create tummy tuck incisions where they will be concealed by undergarments and bathing suits. In some cases, liposuction may be appropriate for removing significant fat deposits or sculpting around the treated area.

Abdominoplasty is performed under general anesthesia, and many patients choose to spend the night in the hospital after the procedure. Most abdominoplasty patients are able to return to normal activities within a few weeks, though they must wear a compression bandage for a couple months after surgery. It is a good idea to avoid sitting for long periods in the weeks following surgery, and some light exercise may speed healing. However, it is important to avoid strenuous exercise and heavy lifting for about six weeks.
